About vocal music, they commented that after WW2, with the contributions of poets, musicians and singers like Jacques Prévert, Boris Vian, Joseph Kosma, Georges Brassens, Charles Trenet, etc., French songs must br considered to have entered the domain of literature for it is no longer a minor art. Prévert's poetry was made into songs and met with great success, so much so that the philosopher Jean Paul Sartre wrote the lyrics for La Rue Des Blancs Manteaux, the poet Raymond Queneau wrote for Si Tu T'imagines, Georges Brassens set Victor Hugo and Paul Fort's poetry to music, Léo Ferré set Aragon's poems and Hélène Martin did it for Jean Genet's. The book said this about the place of songs: En quelques années, la chanson est devenue intelligente, humoristique, sensible, satirique, enfin intéressante. La chanson a pénétré dans toutes les couches sociales. (...) Elle fait partie de notre vie quotidienne. (In the space of a few years, songs have become intelligent, humorous, sensitive, satirical, in short interesting. They have penetrated all social strata. They are part of everyday life...)
The frontier between songs and poetry has almost vanished. Music helps poetry enter our heart quicker.
Coming back to Vietnamese literature, we see that most of it it consists of poems that are sung, such as TRUYỆN KIỀU, LỤC VÂN TIÊN, with their characteristic intonations known as ''kể Kiều'' (Kiều reciting) and ''nói thơ Vân Tiên'' (Vân Tiên reciting). People come to literature via ca ngâm (recitative) and so works of poetry often carry the word NGÂM or CA in their titles, such as CHINH PHỤ NGÂM (The Recitative Of The Soldier's Wife), CUNG OA'N NGÂM KHÚC (The Recitative Of The Reproachful Royal Concubine), GIA HUẤN CA (Song For Upbringing Children). HÁT Ả ÐÀO (Songstress's singing) consists entirely of the poems of famous poets such as Tú Xương, Nguyễn Khắc Hiếu, etc. We could say that ancient Vietnamese literature consisted of short songs and extended songs.
In Vietnamese music, since modern music (Tân Nhạc) overtook traditional music (Cổ Nhạc), songs whether short or long, set in the traditional pentatonic scale or in the western diatonic, have played a very large role and now occupy a secure position in the hearts of the last three or four generations. Even a cursory glance will show that over the last 50 years the melodies of Vietnamese songs have become richer and richer, the lyrics more and more intellectual, capable of expressing the feelings and emotions of successive generations through the words of hundreds of songwriters, from Lê Thương and Ðặng Thế Phong through Văn Cao to Trịnh Công Sơn... and if contemporary or future composers, who are better trained in musical theories and techniques, would put their effort into harmonizing and orchestrating their predecessor's songs, Vietnamese music will not remain inferior to western music! Furthermore, the special historical circumstances of our country may give Vietnamese music a vitality that may be lacking in western classical or modern music.
I started as a songwriter and have remained one forever, without any inferiority complex, because when I came back after studying music in France and look at the present stage of development of Vietnamese music, I could see that I could not take the path of non vocal music as typified by western classical music. I decided that if I was to continue writing songs, I had to elevate them by continually improving both lyrics and melody, so that by the end of my career, my music would come close to the symphonic style which everyone seemed to consider the culmination of music, and my lyrics would deserve a place in literature.
As everyone knows, some of the lyrics to my songs were written by myself while others were poems, some famous, some unknown. I like setting poems to music for the simple reason that I have loved poetry since an early age. Later, many of my friends were good poets and helped increase my love of poetry. Lastly, I had a lover who was fond of pre-war poetry and wrote 300 love poems for me.
My career of setting poems to music has been a long one. I started with works by already well-known poets such as Cô Hái Mơ (The Apricot Picker) by Nguyễn Bính (1942), Tiếng Thu (The Sound Of Autumn) (1945) Vần Thơ Sầu Rụng (Sad Falling Verses), Hoa Rụng Ven Sông (Flowers falling By The River), Thú Ðau Thương (Pleasure Of Suffering) by Lưu Trọng Lư. I came to Thế Lữ's Tiếng Sáo Thiên Thai (Fairyland Flute) in 1952, Huy Cận's Ngậm Ngùi (Melancholy) and Xuân Diệu's Chiều (Evening) in the early 1960s. I also set to music some works by other great poets such as Mầu Thời Gian by Ðoàn Phú Tứ, Tỳ Bà (Luth) by Bích Khê, Con Quỳ Lạy Chúa Trên Trời (I Kneel To Thee In Heaven) by Nhất Tuấn in those early days.
Apart from putting to music the already classic works of modern poetry, in the 1960s I contributed to the popularization the work of new, as yet unknown poets such as Kiếp Nào Có Yêu Nhau (If We Fall In Love Again In Some Other Life), Ðừng Bỏ Em Một Mình (Don't Leave Me Alone) by Hoài Trinh, Mùa Thu Paris (Paris Autumn), Tiễn Em (Saying Good Bye), Kiếp Sau (In The Next Life), Bên Ni Bên Nớ (This Side, That Side), Về Ðây (Coming Back), Chiều Ðông (Winter Afternoon) by Cung Trầm Tưởng, Mùa Xuân Yêu Em (Loving You In Spring) by Ðỗ Quý Toa`n, Tâm Sự Gửi Về Ðâu (Where Shall I Confide) by Lê Minh Ngọc, etc.
I worked on many poems about war, peace and love during those thirty years of turmoil: Thanh Niên Ca (Youth Song) by Ðào Duy Kỳ, Ðồi Tím Hoa Sim (Rose Myrtle Covered Purple Hills) by Hữu Loan, Lời Mẹ Dặn (Words My Mother Taught) by Phùng Quán, Kỉ Vật Cho Em (A Souvenir For You) by Linh Phương, Tưởng Như Còn Người Yêu (It Feels Like You're Still Here) by Lê Thị Ý, Khi Tôi Về (When I Come Back) by Kim Tuấn, Nhân Danh (In The Name Of) by Nguyễn Ðắc Xuân, Bi Hài Kịch (Tragicomedy) by Thái Luân, Ði Vào Quê Hương (Walking Into The Homeland) by Hoa Ðất Nắng, Tình Khúc Trên Chiến Trường Tồi Tệ (Love Song On The Wretched Battlefield), Thầm Gọi Tên Nhau Trên Chiến Trường Tồi Tệ (Silently Calling Each Other On The Wretched Battlefield) by Ngô Ðình Vận, Mười Hai Tháng Anh Ði (Twelve Month On The Road) by Phạm Văn Bình, Còn Chút Gì Ðể Nhớ (Something To Remember) by Vũ Hữu Ðịnh, Ở Rừng U Minh Ta Không Thấy Em (I Can't See You In U Minh Forest) by Nguyễn Tiến Cung, Chuyện Tình Buồn (Sad Love) by Phạm Văn Bình, etc. I must also mention the cycle CHIẾN CA MÙA HÈ (Summer War Song) consisting of 13 poems by Phạm Lê Phan which I put to music during the Fiery Summer (Mùa Hè Ðỏ Lửa) of 1972.
In the early 1970s, I was fortunate to introduce two poetic phenomena to the the public: the Tao poetry of Phạm Thiên Thư: Ðưa Em Tìm Ðộng Hoa Vàng (Taking You To The Yellow Flower Grotto), Gọi Em Là Ðoá Hoa Sầu (Calling You The Sad Flower), Em Lễ Chùa Này (You Were Praying At This Pagoda), etc. which make up my song cycle The Ten Tao Songs, and the amusing love poems of Nguyễn Tất Nhiên: Thà Như Giọt Mưa (I'd Rather Be A Raindrop), Em Hiền Như Ma Soeur (You're As Sweet As Sister), Hai Năm Tình Lận Ðận (Two Years Of Suffering Love)...
After leaving the country, in addition to short poems by Hà Huyền Chi such as Mười Năm Một Chuyện Tình Buồn (Ten Years A Sad Love), Năm Ngàn Năm Về Trước (Five Thousand Years Ago), by Nguyên Sa such as Vết Sâu (Deep Mark), by Cao Tần such as Thư Em Ðến (Your Letter Arrives), Mai Mốt ông Về (I'll Be Back One Day Soon), by Viên Linh such as Thủy Mi^. Quan, by Nguyễn Xuân Quang such as Mây Trôi Trôi Hết Môt Ðời (Clouds Passes Through A Lifetime), by Duyên Anh such as Có Bao Giờ Em Hỏi Em (Will You Ever Ask), Anh Ðã Tới Paris (I Have Arrived In Paris) and five collections of poems by Ngô Xuân Hâ.u entitled MỘ KHÚC (Evensongs) I, II, III, IV và V etc. I also released Ngục Ca (Prison Songs) and Hoàng Cầm Ca (Hoàng Cầm's songs) based on the works of by Nguyễn Chí Thiê.n and Hoàng Cầm respectively.
Thus, having traversed almost every path of contemporary Vietnamese poetry in my youth and middle age, as I approach old age my journey must lead me to the poetry of HÀN MẶC Tử and NGUYỄN DU.
